Who needs fat?

Fat grafting has changed the approach toward facial aesthetic surgery dramatically. Traditional facelifts may not provide a natural result as a stand alone procedure. Facial fat injections should almost always be a part of any facial rejuvenation procedure and frequently is the only surgical technique needed.

Facial fat loss is the primary reason for the changes seen in the aging face. Gravity merely allows us to witness what fat wasting and redistribution has accomplished. In the past, cosmetic surgeons would attempt to 'take up the slack' with a face lift procedure. Frequently, this resulted in an un-natural 'pulled' appearance. If fat loss is not addressed, faces may appear skeletal or mask-like.

Facial fat transfer allows us to restore the face to its natural, youthful beauty. By restoring fat volume to select areas of the face, a less sunken and more rounded face is created. Such a change can make the face appear more healthy and youthful and helps plump out folds and wrinkles that have developed. There is no concern about a foreign substance in your body since the fat used comes from you! Fat is (unfortunately) readily available, is a living tissue, will not be rejected, feels natural and can be replenished.

How is fat transfer performed?

Structural facial fat grafting is most commonly performed on the cheeks, upper and lower eyelids, mid-face, jowls, lips and hands. We use a technique called micro-fat grafting, in which tiny amounts of fat are delicately placed with a small blunt needle in a series of discrete layers throughout the face and hands. This allows the thin beads of fat to 'find' and new blood supply and flourish. This procedure requires specialized training and specialized surgical instruments, as well as patience and attention to detail on the part of the surgeon. When micro fat grafting or fat transfer is performed properly, permanent improvements in facial aesthetics are possible.

Fat transfer is actually two procedures performed in a single session that lasts approximately 1 hour.  First, the fat is 'harvested' from a fattier (unwelcome) area of the body, such as the abdomen, hips or buttocks, through a gentle suctioning technique.  Using a small cannula, the fat is then injected into the face.  The fat does not move or shift as it becomes incorporated as living tissue; results are extremely long lasting, if not permanent.  This outpatient procedure requires only local anesthetic or IV sedation, and there are no dressings or drains. Additional fat is taken and can be stored for up to one year for future embellishments.

Stem Cell Enhanced Fat Transfer:

Special processing of the fat during surgery results in 'supercharging' the fat with a high concentration of your own stem cells. Stem cells are regenerative and help the transplanted fat survive and flourish. Secondary effects such as improved complexion have been observed with this technique. Best of all, these are your own stem cells and thus very safe.

This is one of the most commonly requested procedures in our clinic and patient satisfaction with this technique is very high. We are experts in fat transfer technology and have years of experience with it. Dr. Light was among the first cosmetic surgeons to introduce this procedure to North Texas. We encourage you to consult with Dr. Light regarding this exciting procedure. All consults are free. Call today and schedule your visit.
