Ambulatory phlebectomy micro-extraction is a procedure which allows for the removal of large surface varicosities through very small incisions that need no stitches. Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins, typically 3 mm or more in diameter, often dark blue in color, and rise above the surface of the skin.
A varicose vein has valves that are not functioning properly. The blood can flow upwards, but tends to pool in the vein because of valve dysfunction. The varicose veins bulge because they are filled with pooled blood. Varicose veins are of primarily cosmetic concern, but also cause pain, leg heaviness, fatigue, itching, night cramps, leg swelling, and restless legs at night.
Heredity is the number one contributing factor causing varicose veins. Women are more likely to suffer from abnormal leg veins. Pregnancy causes increases in hormone levels and blood volume, which in turn cause veins to enlarge. Ambulatory phlebectomy is recommended for medium and large varicose veins.
Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. Skin incisions or needle punctures as small as 1 mm are used to extract veins with a phlebectomy hook. A hook is inserted into a micro-incision. A section of the vein is hooked and then removed through the incision. After treatment, a compression bandage is worn for two weeks. This minimizes swelling and discomfort and allows for proper healing. Sutures are not required to close the incisions as they are extremely small.
